NIGHT MARE by Vicki Kamida

This book is about a girl named Janet who has a love for horses, which increases when her and her family move from San Francisco to Pasadena, California. She loves going to the stable near her house, but feels left out from the other girls because she does not have her very own horse. Janet then dreams of a beautiful white mare, which she names Storm, and riding the horse feels like a dream to Janet. Janet knows that the horse is real, it has to be, so she goes down to the arroyo the next day to look, where she finds the horse of her dreams and befriends J.G. and Larissa, a brother and sister who live at the ranch, and soon finds out that Storm is actually Larissa’s horse. Janet feels disappointed that she will never be able to keep Storm as her own, but the dream is still a mystery to her. What will happen to Janet, and what mysteries await at the ranch?
My favorite part of the story is when Janet finds out that J.G., Larissa, and Storm are ghosts that were trapped in the canyon and called on her to set their spirits free. I liked this part because I could feel real emotions along with Janet.

THE NIGHT THE WHITE DEER DIED by Gary Paulsen

A 15 year old girl named Janet who lives in New Mexico. She has been having a nightmare about a deer. She is the only Anglo [ white person] in her school. She met a man who gets drunk a lot. His name is Billy he is an Indian. Janet’s nightmare is based around how much she loves Billy even thought he is much older. She wishes Billy was still with her, but he left her to leave.
The saddest part of the book is when Janet is asked to leave by Billy even thought she loves him. She loves him for what he could be. Janet rode the pony all the way down the mountain. Crying, her mother had to help her get off. I felt so bad for her.
