LANE SUMMER READING 2013

AMAZING FACES by Lee Bennett Hopkins
This is our 2013 Summer Reading selection! Many amazing faces & amazing poems .
What do you see when you look in a mirror?
What do you see when you look out the window?
Faces that are like yours? Different from yours? 
How do these poems make you feel???
DIRECTIONS FOR GRADE 4 & 5 STUDENTS:
1. READ the book AMAZING FACES. THINK about each poem, each message, and how each one made you feel. Use sticky notes to mark special parts of the book if you find it helpful. 
2. Access this blog...you have already!
3. Click on the COMMENTS link below this post.  
4. CHOOSE ONE POEM that you felt a connection with
5. Start the comment with the POEM'S TITLE, & RESPOND to the following questions using PROOF from the text to support your answers. Complete sentences please, and no text speech! :-)
    a. Why did you choose this poem? What was your connection?
    b. How did this poem make you feel?
    c. Was this poem a mirror or a window? Both?
    d. How did the book Amazing Faces make you feel? Did you like it? Why or why not?
6. End the comment with your FIRST NAME (and the first letter of your last name if necessary) and GRADE
7. Under CHOOSE YOUR IDENTITY, click ANONYMOUS
8. Click PUBLISH YOUR COMMENT -  and you are FINISHED!!!

IN THE FALL, WE WILL FOLLOW-UP WITH ACTIVITIES 
THAT TIE IN TO THE BOOK AND IT'S POEMS.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
  1. Write a poem about your own AMAZING FACE!
  2. Draw a picture of your AMAZING FACE!
  3. Create an avatar of your face using the "pickaface" website http://pickaface.net/create_avatar.html

Here are some reading guidelines for the Fall Conversation CafĂ© book: 
 What does the book reveal about social issues?
 Who tells the story?
 Whose story is this?
 What did you think the author was saying to you?
 How did the book make you think about your own life?
 What associations (movies – songs – current events) were triggered in your mind?
 Do any of the themes relate to topics or events in the news?
 To whom would you recommend this book?
