The book is about a boy named Mason who lives in Vermont on a farm. He walks to school in the snow. One day he draws a picture for his dad and it falls onto the ice of the Black River. Aiden, the bully, picks it up off of the ice and gives it back to Mason and runs off. Later Aiden goes off to the war and dies. Mason never got to thank Aiden. Mason rings the bell for Aiden.
My favorite part of the book was when Mason rang the bell for Aiden but it was also sad because Aiden died and everyone else thought he was just a bully.
I would recommend this book to boys and girls 9 - 11.
