Ella Fitzgerald
The Story of a Vocal Virtuoso
Ella was born in Newport News, Virginia-
The child of a father who abandoned her, William, and a
loving mother, Temple.
Growing up, she lived in Yonkers, New York-
Going to school but not graduating, studying dance,
overcoming poverty or poorness.
In her late teens, she became a vocal virtuoso who became
known as the Queen of Jazz-
A singer all though her life, using her fame as a singer to
overcome discrimination.
Anyone could describe her as bubbly, always persevering
through anything-
Using her money for children’s charities, fighting through
diabetes, winning 14 Grammies and a Kennedy Center Honor.
Ella brought scat and jazz to fame.
